Coping With the Loss of a Pet

Losing a loved one is certainly painful - be it a close relative, a best friend, or your loving pet. The pain drains you both emotionally and physically. However, we all get over it eventually with the emotional support from those around us.

This might not always be the case - especially if you have recently lost a pet. The relationship between pets and owners is a hugely underestimated one. Hence, people who have lost a pet might not get enough emotional support from others. In worst cases, insensitive comments like 'It's just a cat, no big deal' and 'why don't you get another one?' are thrown at them. All this makes it even harder to get over them.

As an ex-dog owner, I can understand this situation all too well

The few pieces of advice below might help you feel better.

1. TELL SOMEONE HOW YOU FEEL.
Instead of bottling up your emotions, talk to someone who you trust. Dog owners might understand your situation better.

2. JOIN SUPPORT GROUPS
There are a lot of people around you who face similar hardships. Joining support groups exposes you to these people who might empathize with you better.

3. KNOW THAT ITS OKAY TO GRIEVE.
No matter what others might say, know that it's alright. When I had to go through this tough situation a few months ago, a lot of people didn't even care because it was just a dog. They even told me to get a new one.
Don't let people like them bring you down.

4. HEALING TAKES TIME.
The wound takes time to recover. You will get over it after a while. It's okay.

I really hope these tips will help you as much as they had helped me.

Until next time.
